Maya graduated from Azad University in Iran with a master’s degree in Accounting. She has over 10 years of experience providing accounting services. Maya likes spending time with her family, biking, listening to music, camping, and solving mysteries and puzzles.

Sonia Peña, CPA

Director

Sonia has over 20 years of experience working as finance and operations director with several national nonprofits based in Oakland, California including Color of Change and Race Forward where she was responsible for overall accounting and finance operations, including audit readiness as well as ongoing operational management of payroll, HR, budgeting and IT. She has a master’s in accounting from St. Mary’s College. When not doing accounting she enjoyes biking, reading and spending time with her family.

Memona Rana, CPA

Audit

Memona graduated form Punjab University in Pakistan with bachelor’s degree in accounting. Memona has received her CPA license and has several years of experience in accounting services along with over 5 years of experience in tax services. She likes to spend time with her two young kids and family.

August Zajonc, CPA

Director

August has over 21 years of experience in nonprofit finance and accounting and has been with C&K for over 10 years. Prior to working with Crosby & Kaneda, he worked as a Director of Finance with a variety of Bay Area nonprofits including nonprofits with contributed support, earned revenue and government funding. These roles included helping nonprofits meet their audit, fiscal and compliance obligations. Prior to that he worked as a Program Finance Officer at a foundation serving nonprofits with construction and program expansion financing.

Justin Azama

Audit

Justin received his BA from the University of Hawaii in 2006 and has completed additional accounting course work at California State University, East Bay. He joined Crosby & Kaneda in 2007 as a staff accountant and has assisted in numerous reviews and audits of nonprofit organizations. Justin has also been involved in his community as a volunteer at various public health clinics, and in his free time enjoys art, snowboarding, surfing, and other outdoor activities.

April De Verney

Audit

April received her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Golden Gate University in 2010 and was awarded the 2009-2010 B.S. in Accounting Outstanding Graduate award by the GGU faculty. April joined Crosby and Kaneda as a Staff Accountant in 2013. Prior to joining Crosby and Kaneda, April worked in the insurance industry for several years, primarily in Finance and Administration roles. April has been involved in serving her community through volunteer work at Open Hands and when not working or studying, she is exercising or enjoying outdoor activities with her husband and two young children.

Felix Gorrindo

Tax

Felix has a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of San Diego, California that eventually led him towards the world of tax and accounting. He later received a certificate of accounting from UC Berkeley and has spent time working at both Non-profits and tax firms doing an array of finance work, while ultimately having his strongest expertise in taxation. His interests include following local sports teams, playing guitar, hiking, macro-economics and financial markets.

Mark Hawkins

Office

Mark brings his diverse professional background (ranging from small business and project management to nonprofit programming) to bear on keeping the Crosby & Kaneda machine moving forward. After receiving a BA from the University of Michigan, he moved to the Bay Area so long ago that it is now considered “home”. Outside the office, his interests are as diverse as his professional experiences – travel (five continents so far), art (creating and experiencing), food, books, biking, and more. His work in the community is currently focused on helping recent refugees to the United States with their English language skills.

Tierna Jensen

Tax

Tierna received her BS from Brigham Young University in 2017. She joined Crosby and Kaneda as a member of the tax team. Tierna is passionate about math and loves working with numbers. She has been involved in serving her community as a regular volunteer at a center for individuals with disabilities. Outside of work she enjoys to hike and travel with her husband and children.

Stephanie Miller

Review

Stephanie received her bachelor’s degree from Montclair State University and is pursuing her CPA. Prior to joining Crosby and Kaneda she had worked in the accounting industry for over 10 years, including time at another CPA firm. She currently focuses her work on the firms review clients. In her free time, Stephanie likes to spend time outdoors and be with her family.

Baback Nabidavoodi

Audit & Review

Baback received his bachelor’s degree in Business Economics from the University of California, Riverside in 2019 and is currently working towards his prerequisites to sit for the CPA exam. He joined Crosby & Kaneda in 2023 as an Accounting Associate and has assisted in numerous reviews and audits of nonprofit organizations. In his free time, Baback enjoys playing soccer, snowboarding, camping, and other outdoor activities. He also loves spending time with his family and two dogs Zeus and Odin!

Vanessa Thomas

Audit

Vanessa earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance) & Minor in Risk Management and Insurance from California State University, Sacramento, and is currently continuing her education. Vanessa joined Crosby & Kaneda in 2022 and has assisted in numerous audits and reviews of nonprofit organizations. She has been involved in her community by volunteering at different assisted living facilities as well as consistently gathering items to donate to those locals in serious need. When she is not studying or working, Vanessa enjoys spending her time outdoors, primarily on the water, and spending time with her family and friends.

Hilary Crosby, CPA

Part Time

Hilary performed numerous audits and has provided accounting, bookkeeping, and management services to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations. She also taught nonprofit financial management at the Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management at the University of San Francisco, and served as treasurer or controller on several nonprofit boards. Hilary received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and was awarded a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management by the University of San Francisco. She continues to serve as a resource to the firm on occasion.

Adele Kaneda, CPA

Retired

Adele has been in public accounting since 1988. She was with the public accounting firm of Price Waterhouse & Company before her association with a local CPA firm. Throughout the years, Adele has been involved in community service, including the Diablo Valley Foundation for the Aging Bill Payer Program. Adele is a graduate of Boston University (MS, Business Administration) and the University of Hawaii (M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction). She continues to serve as a resource to the firm on occasion.
